Instructions

Berkeley's Recycling Center does not have the capacity to safely accept aerosol cans. Please bring cans to Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility, 2100 East 7th Street, Oakland or mail in to the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) regional office at 700 Heinz Ave; Suite 200, Berkeley, California 94710-2721.

Alternatives

There may be an alternative to an aerosol propellant spray of the material you wish to disperse, if you can find a pump-spray of that same material.

Facts

Since 1978, no aerosols made or sold in the U.S. have contained CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) except for a tiny fraction (less than 2%) specifically approved by the government for essential medical and other unique uses, such as inhalers for asthma sufferers. CFCs used as aerosol propellants, were found to cause ozone depletion. In the United States, the most common propellants are naturally occurring hydrocarbons. A few products, about 10% of today’s aerosols, use compressed gases like carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide as propellants. (National Aerosol Association)
